Frequently asked questions
Per DEWA's published Sept 2024 tariff: AED 0.70/kWh for AC (home-grade) charging and AED 1.20/kWh for DC fast charging, both subject to 5% VAT. So actual cost is AED 0.735 (AC) and AED 1.26 (DC) per kWh. Commercial/fleet rates are AED 0.29/kWh — out of scope for personal calculation here.
Charging at home using your normal DEWA connection runs at the regular slab tariff — around AED 0.23-0.38/kWh depending on which slab tier your household sits in. That's significantly cheaper than DEWA Green Charger public AC. The realistic UAE EV owner pattern: 80% home charging, 20% public for road trips and top-ups.
Yes — only the Salik tag is free for EVs (saves the AED 100 one-off tag fee). EV drivers still pay AED 4 per gate crossing like everyone else. No exemption from the toll itself.
UAE petrol prices change on the 1st of each month. June 2026 rates per Ministry of Energy & Infrastructure: Super 98 AED 3.95, Special 95 AED 3.83, E-Plus 91 AED 3.76, Diesel AED 4.33. Check uae.gov.ae or ADNOC Distribution app for the current month before doing any precise calculation.
Energy cost is consistently 50-70% lower for EVs (verified by this calculator). But total cost of ownership depends on three other factors: (1) purchase price — EVs are still 15-30% more expensive new than petrol equivalents; (2) depreciation — EVs depreciate faster (20-25% year 1 vs 12-18% for petrol); (3) battery replacement risk after warranty. Over 5 years, EVs often break even or save AED 8-20k on running cost but lose more on depreciation. Verdict varies by model and ownership length.
DEWA Green Charger AC (Type 2): 3-7 hours full charge for most EVs. DC fast (CCS / GB/T): 30-50 minutes for 10-80%. Home wallbox: 6-10 hours overnight. Plan road trips around DC fast chargers — DEWA E2GO + Salik network now cover most highways.
