Fraction Calculator
Add, subtract, multiply, or divide two fractions. Returns the result as a simplified fraction and as a decimal.
Step by step
- 1Find a common denominator: 2 × 4 = 8
- 2Rewrite the fractions: 4/8 + 2/8
- 3Add the numerators: 4 + 2 = 6
- 4Simplify 6/8 → 3/4
How to use
- 1
Pick whether you want to add, subtract, multiply, or divide.

Frequently asked questions
After applying the operation, the result is reduced by dividing the numerator and denominator by their greatest common divisor (GCD). For example, 4/8 simplifies to 1/2 because GCD(4,8) = 4.
Yes. Put the negative sign on the numerator. The calculator normalises the sign so the denominator always stays positive in the final result.
An improper fraction has a numerator greater than or equal to the denominator (e.g. 7/4). A mixed number splits it into a whole part plus a proper fraction (e.g. 1 3/4). Both represent the same value.
Dividing by a/b means multiplying by b/a. If a (the second numerator) is zero, then b/a is undefined — you can't divide by zero.
