Frequently asked questions
After applying the operation, the result is reduced by dividing the numerator and denominator by their greatest common divisor (GCD). For example, 4/8 simplifies to 1/2 because GCD(4,8) = 4. The calculator uses the Euclidean algorithm to find the GCD.
Switch to Customize mode and enable mixed-number inputs. You'll see a 'whole' field appear before the numerator. Type 2 in whole, 3 in numerator, 4 in denominator. The calculator converts 2 3/4 to 11/4 internally, does the maths, then shows the result in both improper and mixed form.
Yes. Put the negative sign on the numerator (e.g., −3/4). For mixed numbers, the sign on the whole part applies to the whole fraction — so −2 1/4 = −9/4, not −2 + 1/4.
An improper fraction has a numerator greater than or equal to the denominator (e.g. 7/4). A mixed number splits it into a whole part plus a proper fraction (e.g. 1 3/4). Both represent the same value — Liphyr shows both side-by-side.
The calculator uses the continued-fraction algorithm to find the simplest rational approximation of any decimal. It works for terminating decimals exactly (0.75 → 3/4) and gives a close rational approximation for repeating or irrational decimals (0.333333 → 1/3).
Dividing by a/b means multiplying by b/a. If a (the second numerator) is zero, then b/a is undefined — you can't divide by zero.
