Frequently asked questions
Umm al-Qura is the calculated Hijri calendar used officially by Saudi Arabia and the UAE. It's based on a mathematical algorithm predicting moon visibility. The astronomical (moon-sighting) method relies on actual sighting of the crescent moon by physical observers. The two can differ by 1-2 days, especially around Ramadan, Eid, and Hajj.
While Umm al-Qura provides the calculated date, the UAE Moon-Sighting Committee (Hilal Committee) confirms religious observance based on actual moon sighting. If the moon is not sighted on the predicted evening, the month extends by one day. Always check official UAE announcements for confirmed Ramadan, Eid al-Fitr, Eid al-Adha, and Hajj dates.
Most common uses in UAE: visa expiry dates (often expressed in Hijri on Emirates ID), contracts with Hijri reference dates, planning around Islamic events (Ramadan, Eid, Hajj), calculating ages from old documents that use Hijri birth dates, and historical research.
AH = Anno Hegirae (Latin for 'in the year of the Hijra'). It marks years since Prophet Muhammad's migration from Mecca to Medina in 622 CE. So 1447 AH means 1,447 lunar years since that event.
12 lunar months, each 29 or 30 days, total 354 or 355 days per year. About 11 days shorter than the Gregorian year. This is why Islamic events (like Ramadan) shift earlier in the Gregorian calendar each year by about 11 days.
The Umm al-Qura algorithm used by Saudi Arabia and the UAE is officially published for the range 1343-1500 AH (1924-2077 CE). Outside this range, the calculation falls back to estimates that may not match official future Saudi calendars.
