How to use

  1. 1

Pick your situation: a new learner, a driver whose foreign licence can't be exchanged, or a licence from a country on RTA's exchange list.

  2. 2

Choose your age band. The licence is AED 320 at 21 or older and AED 120 under 21.

  3. 3

The school fee starts at Belhasa's regular course for your level. Type your own school's quote over it.

  4. 4

Set how many times you expect to sit each test. Every extra road test adds AED 220 and four retraining sessions at your school's price.

Frequently asked questions

Opening the file costs AED 370: traffic file AED 200, learning permit AED 100, handbook AED 50 and AED 20 in knowledge and innovation fees. The knowledge, yard and road tests are AED 220 each. After the road test the licence costs AED 320 if you're 21 or older and AED 120 if you're younger. The eye test is AED 140 to 180 depending on the centre.

Schools set their own prices. Belhasa's published regular course for a light vehicle, read in October 2026, comes to AED 3,050.25 for 20 hours (beginners), AED 2,777.25 for 15 hours (2 to 5 years with a licence) and AED 2,399.25 for 10 hours (over 5 years), before RTA's fees. Night, Sunday and shift courses cost more.

RTA requires 4 training sessions after each failed road test before you can book the next one, and the AED 220 test fee is paid again. The school charges for those sessions at its own rate. If you miss a booked test, you pay the fee again too.

If your licence comes from a country on RTA's exchange list, yes. The list has 60 entries, including Britain, the USA, Canada, Australia, most European countries, the GCC, Japan and South Korea. Many entries apply only to that country's own citizens. The exchange costs AED 1,050: traffic file AED 200, licence AED 600, handbook AED 50, eye test AED 180 and AED 20. India, Pakistan and the Philippines aren't on the list.

No. RTA shortens the training for a valid foreign licence: 20 sessions if it was issued more than 5 years ago, 30 for 2 to 5 years and 40 for under 2 years. RTA also offers a one-time "golden chance": the knowledge and road tests with no training. Failing that road test means doing the training.

Per RTA, a first licence lasts 2 years if you're 21 or older and 1 year if you're younger. Renewed licences last 5 years for residents aged 21 or older, 10 years for UAE and GCC citizens, and 1 year under 21.

No. These are RTA Dubai's fees. The police licensing departments in the other emirates set their own.
